Will I be bored?
In a world of smart phones and technology we are constantly bombarded by sensory input and mental activity. Often during your first float as you're adjusting to the lack of stimulation you may find it challenging to just be. It's common to feel unsure of the experience because it's so foreign, but we encourage our guests to breathe deeply, open their eyes and let go of any expectations of what they feel like they 'should' be doing instead. The deep relaxation and sense of calm that follows is far from boring and often timeless.
What if I'm claustrophobic?
We have had several guests with varying degrees of claustrophobia and each has successfully floated and enjoyed their experience! If you have a concern about being enclosed in a small space, we encourage you to stop by and take a look at our tanks. Unlike others, the flotation tanks at glowspa are custom built like a small room, you're even able to stand up in them. In addition, you are in control of your environment at all times. You can open the door, leave a light on and/or play music if desired.
What if I can't swim? Can I drown or flip over in the tank?
With only 10 inches of water there is no need to know how to swim! Additionally, the water is so incredibly dense that no skill or effort is required to float. People often fall asleep while floating and will wake themselves up by flinching or turning their head, you can't flip over and if you do, we promise, you'll notice.
I'm a large / small person, will I float?
The water in our tanks is twice as buoyant as that of the Dead Sea, so regardless of stature it is impossible not to float. You float on top of the water, similar to a cork, no matter what size or shape you are.
What if I fall asleep?
Because of the deep relaxation created, it is common for people to fall asleep in the tank. In fact, one hour of floating is equivalent to 4 hours of restful sleep. The buoyancy of the water will keep you floating. There is no risk as you allow yourself to drift away.
Is it sanitary? How do you clean the water?
Floating is extremely sanitary. Our state of the art filtration system runs a complete filtration cycle on the water four times after every session. For any maintenance or cleaning we use hydrogen peroxide. It's important to note that the Dead Sea got its name because the salinity supports no life, even bacteria cannot live in salt water and our water is twice as potent. Some in the float community even argue the water inside the tank is cleaner than tap water. We take every precaution to provide you with the cleanest, safest and most relaxing experience possible.
What do I wear?
We prefer that you wear nothing but your birthday suit. The soaps and detergents from bathing suits cause more maintenance for the chemistry of the tank. Your experience is completely private from beginning to end and there are locks on every treatment room door.
Will the salt hurt my skin?
No, the salt is very healthy for your skin and leaves you feeling soft and silky after your shower. If you have abrasions, scratches or other cuts, the salt can sting, but it will subside after some time and can be very healing. We suggest you do not shave the day of your session. A gel is provided for you to protect any potential areas of sensitivity.
Am I locked in?
No, there is no way to become locked in or stuck inside the float tank. You are in control of your experience at all times.
Is it safe for Children?
Yes, it is safe for children. However, we require children under the age of sixteen to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
What if nothing happens?
Each float experience is completely unique! Expectations are one of the greatest hindrances to having a good float. It's very important that you allow yourself to let go and know that whatever your experience, your body is receiving the benefits of deep relaxation. There is much to say about an individual's ability to just be and we encourage that you allow yourself this time and space to do exactly that. How many times do I need to go to feel results?
The benefits of floating are noticeable even with only one float, however, like any therapy consistent and repeated usage amplifies the results. Expect to float 2-3 times to really understand the positive impact floating can have in your life.
What do I bring?
Just yourself, everything else is provided for you unless you need a hair brush or a contact lens case.
Will I be spacey afterwards?
People's experiences vary. Sometimes you may experience the feeling of being extremely relaxed similar to after a good massage, but often people feel the opposite and have a heightened sense of alertness and energy. Be aware of how you feel after the float and give yourself some transition time as part of your scheduled float.
Will I get cold, like staying too long in a bath?
No, the tank is heated all the time to the perfect temperature to heighten your floating experience. The temperature of the water feels warm when you get in, but in fact it is at normal skin temperature (93.5 degrees Fahrenheit), the perfect temperature for floating. In addition, the float suite is heated to ensure that you are always warm.
Is there a cumulative effect of using the tank on a regular basis?
Yes, there seems to be a cumulative effect with consistent use of the tank. Relaxation and mindfulness are a learned art that require practice.
Do I need to prepare myself for floating?
The things you should know are: 1) If you shave the day of your float, the shaved skin will sting for a few minutes. If you can postpone your shaving, you will probably be more comfortable. 2) If you wear contact lenses, it would be a problem if any salt water got into your eyes. If you remove your contacts you don't have to be concerned about it. 3) If you have caffeine before you float, it may interfere with your ability to relax.
Should I eat before I go into the tank?
You can eat. If you eat a very heavy meal you may spend a lot of time listening to your digestive juices. And, on the other hand, if you get very hungry you may spend a lot of time listening to your digestive juices. Moderation works.
Is there a typical tank user?
Not that we know of. People of all ages,sizes, and walks of life seem to enjoy the experience equally. The only thing 'typical' is the after glow.
Is anyone not supposed to use the tank?
We don't recommend tank use for the following: 1. Those with suicidal tendencies. 2. Epileptics or those with seizures. 3. Children under 7 years of age. 4. Pregnant women in the middle to end of their 3rd trimester should check with physician first. 5. Post natal should check with physician (for 1st few months after). 6. Anyone with skin rashes or irritations that are in sensitive areas or otherwise difficult to cover with petroleum jelly. 7. Anyone with an infectious or contagious disease. If you have any pre-existing medical disease or have any concerns as to whether you should float, consult your physician first.
Can pregnant women use the tank?
Yes. We suggest that pregnant women inform their physicians or midwives and get their opinion prior to using the tank. The reports received from pregnant women have been enthusiastic. As their bodies get heavier, floating is a great relief from the pull of gravity. Floating has given many women a welcome rest.
Can I use the tank if I'm menstruating?
Yes, the benefits of the magnesium are known to ease the symptoms of PMS. Please use the same sanitary precautions as when swimming in a pool.
Do children use the tank? What is their response?
Yes, we know that children use the tank, but we don't know much about their responses. A 7 1/2 year old came to a public center with his mother. He listened to the orientation she was receiving. When he heard about the fears, he said he was very afraid of the dark. Later, when he used the tank, he was asked about the fear of the dark. He said that was a different dark. Night time dark was scary and full of dragons, and the dark of the tank was friendly and nice.
What effect does salt water have on my skin and hair?
The Epsom salt solution seems to be beneficial to the skin. We have listened to some opinions that say epsom salt is very good for strengthening the hair. We know it's good for roses, why not hair? You thoroughly rinse the salt from your hair and body when you leave the tank. Hair Extensions - Those with hair extensions should consider floating a day or two before they plan to redo them as a precaution we can't promise that every technique used will survive the salt. Float at your own risk with extensions. Color Treated Hair- As long as you're color has been set professionally and you've showered with it at home the salt will not remove your color. EXCEPTION!! - If you like to put in an accent color of Pink or Blue those colors will be stripped out.
Can You Wear a Bathing Cap?
Yes, though we recommend floating au naturale.
Do people sleep in the tank?
Yes, some people fall asleep in the tank, and some people use the tank for sleeping.
Is there a right way to do it? What do I do with my hands?
All the ways are right. Each person should find whatever position is comfortable for them. Some people float with their hands at their sides, some with their hands folded across their chest or abdomen, or behind their heads. You can keep your head at either end or sit up if you like. You may float with the door open or closed. Float the way it is comfortable for you and explore what is best for you.
Could I get electrocuted?
No, the tank has been designed just like a pool or spa.
Is there enough air in the tank?
Yes. The tank is designed not to be airtight, so there is a plentiful air supply. In addition, fresh air is brought in by an air circulation system.
Can two people float in the tank at the same time?
We don't recommend it or allow it. Floating in the tank is intended to be a private, individual experience.
How long do people usually stay in the tank?
The first time people usually schedule an hour. Some people use the tank for 2 or 3 hour sessions. Of course the "perfect" way is to stay in until you want to get out. You may be able to arrange that. Experiment with your own time in the tank to discover what is best for you.
What will it be like for me?
We don't know what it will be like for you since it is such an individual experience. The most common reports are profound peace and relaxation, deep concentration and creativity. We like to avoid saying too much before people use the tank, so that they aren't influenced by what someone else has said. Not only will it be different for you than it is for anyone else, it will be different each time.
Do I need to float more than once?
Yes, if you want to make use of the potential. For us floating is not a finite experience. It touches the infinite. Most people, but not all, get a sense of what floating will be like after they float 3 to 5 times. Will I be able to resume my daily activities when I get out?
Yes. And it may be good to arrange your time so you don't have to rush. Many people enjoy savoring the peace and quiet before jumping into something hectic.
Is this sensory deprivation?
The term "sensory deprivation" describes areas of scientific research that consider the effects of reduced environmental stimulation. The words are an unfortunate choice for those of us who are presenting the floating experience as something pleasant, attractive and relaxing. We notice that people run away from us when they hear the possibility of any form of deprivation. As a result we are careful to point out that the senses are fully operational and in fact, the senses are very pleased to be relieved from the prevalent atmosphere of sensory overload. Stimulus reduction is an accurate description of the tank environment.
Am I locked in? Can't I soak in an Epsom salt at home?
Yes you can and we encourage it. This is very good for the body and can relax you. After you have done this, we recommend that you come and experience the difference of floatation where you are floating in over 800 lbs of Epsom salt in a controlled environment. The feeling of floatation is unique and is not found anywhere else on Earth. You can get great distances by walking, but flying is generally quicker, easier, and available.
How long is a typical float?
We recommend that your first couple of floats be 1-hour long. If you have a regular meditation, yoga, or martial arts practice, than we would recommend 2 hours at first. Although your float is 1-hour, we recommend that you leave a 2-hour block of time for orientation as well as shower before and after. Thereafter you can expect to be at Afloat SpaQua approximately 1.5-hours depending on how long your showers are. Your later floats can be longer than 1-hour. We have found that regulars prefer 2-hour floats.
Will my skin wrinkle or dry out?
No. You can float for hours and never prune. The Epsom salt acts as a regulator for water and inhibits the water from saturating in the skin. Furthermore, as you relax, many of the fine wrinkles on the face relax and flatten. Epsom salt is technically not salt. It is magnesium sulfate and not sodium chloride. It does not have the same drying effects on the skin. Although it does remove oils from the surface layer of the skin, it draws oils from the layers beneath which creates baby-soft skin.
Can floating really improve my life?
It's been said that if someone could capture the effects of floating in a pill, it would quickly outsell Valium, Prozac and Viagra put together. There is a growing movement towards natural solutions to the problems of daily life, solutions with no unwanted side-effects. The benefits of floating are natural, long-term and cumulative. Every time you float, you reinforce the health benefits of the Relaxation Response. In the float tank, your body "learns" what true relaxation feels like, which is a skill it will likely never "forget".
Is floating successful for everyone?
Floating, like most things, doesn't suit everybody although everybody could benefit due to the release of the processing burden on the body. There does need to be a willingness to let go, most experience deep relaxation on their first float, some may need to float a few times before they are able to relax completely, both physically and mentally. Depending on what someone's life consists of, a float might provide an hour of total physical relaxation - or a profound healing experience. Some floats can be transforming, physically, emotionally, and/or spiritually. Floating can be a wonderful aid to opening doors into your inner world, gradually allowing access to those deeper levels at which real changes take place.
What effects does floating have on the mind?
During a float you produce slower brain-wave patterns, known as theta waves, (normally experienced only during deep meditation or just before falling asleep). This can be accompanied by vivid imagery, creative thoughts, sudden insights and inspirations or feelings of profound peace and joy, induced by the release of endorphins, the body's natural opiates.
What effects does floating have on the body?
In the gravity free environment the body balances and heals internally as all the senses are rested. Research shows that floating measurably reduces blood pressure and heart rate while lowering the levels of stress related chemicals in the body. While floating, your body experiences a state of weightlessness. This means your postural muscles don't have to work which is a huge release of your processing. The muscles send a chemical message to the brain saying in effect "You can relax too, the environment is friendly" The blood vessels near the skin relax allowing more blood flow. Within a few minutes you feel better, less stressed, your body and mind become more relaxed more quickly than in any other natural state. The increased blood flow and freedom from pressure promotes healing of muscle strains and relief from joint pain. The more you float the better it gets. Furthermore, the effects lasts not just all day but for a day or two afterwards and the effects are cumulative, meaning, the body begins to pattern itself in this state.
How many times should I float?
This depends on what you are floating for. We recommend that you float at least 3 times within 6 weeks to get the full experience of total relaxation. Many float once a week. Some twice a month, some once a month, and others whenever they feel that they need it. People have different reasons for floating. Many are using it to relieve stress, some are using it to compliment treatments, and others are using it for self awareness. The frequency and duration of your floats will depend on what your reasons for floating are.
